A look at the live result of the battle on Saturday night between Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan
It’s Cinco de Mayo weekend, which means that it’s time for one of the premier boxing events of the entire year. This year, though, it will not be Floyd Mayweather headlining the card this weekend, rather it will be the man that some see as the new face of the sport of boxing, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Saturday night the new lineal middleweight champion will make his first defense since winning the title from Miguel Cotto and he’ll be taking on another notable name in the sport, Amir Khan. With this particular fight, though, Khan is taking quite the risk as he’s jumping up two weight classes to earn the payday on Saturday evening. But if he can put the perfect fight together and come away with the monumental upset, it will all be worth it.
Whatever the result ultimately ends up being, Cinco de Mayo weekend always brings us some of the best boxing action, and it should be even more of a star-studded event with the pride of Mexico himself in Canelo headlining the festivities.
The under card will get started at 9:00 p.m. ET and there will be three fights before the main event between Canelo and Khan. When those two do step into the ring against one another, you can following along with live updates below.
Round 1
Khan comes right out in the opening round and immediately starts throwing some quick jabs, which is the smart move to get things going for him. A short time later he let off a flurry and even hit a nice right hook to the body. Khan really displaying the hand speed in the first round. Canelo finally lands a nice right hook to counter. The challenger really showed some aggression there in the first round, not a bad start to this one for Amir.
Round 2
Canelo came out a lot more aggressive in this round, as he generally does beginning in the second. But Khan was able to get out of trouble with the hand speed again and even landed another right to the body of Canelo. Another good round for Khan moving and staying out of trouble. Only question is how long he can keep it up here. But that was definitely another round for the challenger.
Round 3
Third round you could see that Canelo is ready to start the onslaught soon, and he even landed another left hook to the body, his third of the fight so far on Khan. Third round was more of Khan making Canelo move around and he even landed another combination right before the round ended. We’re definitely at 3-0 here for Khan.
Round 4
Canelo comes out and he’s trying to work that left to the body again, which we knew was going to be the strategy here. He’s gotta try to wear the challenger down. Khan landed another one, but Canelo cam right back with a hard right. Once again, Khan got his shots in where he needed to and he may have taken yet another one here.
Round 5
To start this one off, Canelo is getting a little more aggressive with those power punches, as he’s already really far behind here. Khan has been able to keep the speed up so far here, which is a good thing. Alvarez landed another right to the body, but again it was a punch that was countered by Khan. Canelo is looking for the one big power punch, but the jabs were working as Khan’s right eye was opened up. This is the best round for Alvarez by far. That one goes to Canelo and now Khan might be nearing the danger zone with the cut.
Round 6
Khan comes out and he’s keeping the right up to protect the eye. Canelo is able to get two shots to the body in and then a hook to the right eye, so he’s finding his rhythm here. He has that range now and that can’t be a good sign for the challenger at all. Suddenly, Khan was NAILED with a right hand and he was put to sleep. Literally, out cold on the canvas.
Canelo gets the win via KO in Round 6.
