15 best NBA Draft Lottery lucky charms
11. Cow magnet, Golden State Warriors
Williams wasn’t the only charm present at the 1993 NBA Draft, as the Warriors took a slightly different route to end up with Webber.
Somehow, the Warriors decided on a cow magnet to be their lucky charm during the 1993 NBA Draft Lottery. Farmers feed cow magnets to their cattle to attract any bits of metal that may accumulate in the stomach after grazing.
Head coach Don Nelson got his hands on such a magnet and presumably just bought it with him to the Lottery rather than eating it. Something worked for Golden State, as it earned the third overall pick despite finishing with the seventh-worst record, even while getting passed over by the Magic.
Not only did the Warriors move up in the Lottery, they were able to pry Webber away from Orlando in a blockbuster trade. While Webber would be traded the next offseason, largely due to a feud with Nelson, he had a terrific rookie season and helped Golden State to a 50-win season. The Warriors would receive three first-round picks in the Webber trade, although they were unable to return to the postseason until 2006-07.
Perhaps Nelson should have carried the magnet around more, as he would not coach another playoff team until 2001 to start off a solid run with the Dallas Mavericks. In any case, the cow magnet will go down as one of the best lucky charms in NBA history.
