5. 76ers Trade No. 1 Pick for Roy Hinson (1986)
Coming into the 1986 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers held the No. 1 overall pick and seemed like they could be on the verge of inserting themselves into the mix at the top of the league. However, the Sixers ultimately made a huge trade that would change the league and the course of their franchise in a major way.
Obviously the 76ers had a lot of potential at the time given the talent of their roster. They had two star veterans on the team in Julius Erving and Moses Malone in addition to a young stud in Charles Barkley and other quality young players like Maurice Cheeks. Instead of looking to add another top pick, though, the Sixers made a bold, bold trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Philly traded the No. 1 overall pick for a package that was centered around Roy Hinson. That looks worse now considering he tailed off tremendously, but Hinson was coming off his best NBA season at the time when the trade went down. However, seeing the 76ers make such a big move that altered the league was quite stunning regardless of if Hinson or even Brad Daugherty worked out or not.
