10 trades contenders should make prior to MLB Trade Deadline
5. Seattle Mariners Trade for New York Yankees Outfielder Carlos Beltran
The American League West leading Seattle Mariners have been one of the most pleasant surprises in baseball this season. The Mariners have gotten off to a great start, and appear primed to compete all season long.
The New York Yankees on the other hand, have struggled to begin the season. While they have gotten back on track recently, the Yankees are not exactly in prime position in the AL East. The Yankees are unlikely to be full-blown sellers, but I would not be surprised to see them trade away players who are set to become free agents.
The sweet-swinging Carlos Beltran fits in here.
The 39-year-old Beltran is far from the five-tool player that he once was, but he is still an impressive hitter who can solidify the middle of a lineup. Beltran has been as good as ever this season, hitting .274/.299/.522 with an impressive 120 wRC+ according to Fangraphs.
The Mariners’ offense has been performing well, but they could certainly use a little pop in the lineup. Beltran is also a post-season veteran who would greatly help this team in a deep post-season run.
Probably primarily taking over for Sean Smith in right field, Beltran would be a huge addition to the Mariners’ lineup, and should be able to be had at an extremely reasonable cost.
