8. Ben Roethlisberger gets into a motorcycle accident… without a helmet (2006)
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and his wife just welcomed their third child into the world. He is also at the helm of one of the best offenses in the entire NFL. Earlier in his career, however, Roethlisberger was a bit of a loose cannon.
In June 2006, Roethlisberger was in a motorcycle accident. Though the accident was not deemed his fault, he made the poor choice of riding without a helmet. As a result, the quarterback ended up in serious condition, requiring seven hours of surgery. Though he rebounded and was able to play in the regular season, he gave Steelers Nation quite a scare.
Four years later, Roethlisberger was accused of sexual assault. Though he was not charged, his offseason behavior landed him a four-game suspension at the beginning of the 2010 regular season.
Roethlisberger isn’t the only star member of the Steelers to miss regular season games for problems in the offseason. Running back Le’Veon Bell was suspended at the beginning of the 2015 season for marijuana use in 2014, and wide receiver Martavis Bryant was suspended for all of the 2016 season because he violated the NFL’s substance abuse policy.
