Rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is reportedly learning the new Philadelphia Eagles’ offense better than veteran Sam Bradford.

The Philadelphia Eagles made a flurry of moves at the quarterback position this off season, but imcumbent Sam Bradford has always been expected to be the starter in 2016. However, rookie Carson Wentz appears to be adapting to the new offense much better.

This report comes from NJ.com’s Matt Lombardo, who says, “Carson Wentz looks NFL ready.” Lombardo cautions a small sample size, but he has rave reviews on Wentz’ early play in OTAs.

“Wentz has shown a plus-NFL arm, accuracy to make every throw on the route tree and an ability to move the pocket and buy time,” Lombardo said. “Not for nothing, but Wentz also seems to be ahead of Bradford in terms of mastering Doug Peterson’s offense.”

That last part is what is most interesting to me. Wentz is considered to be a football junkie who will study and learn everything quickly, but it is surprising to learn that he appears to be ahead of Bradford in learning the new offense.

Bradford is a five-year NFL veteran. I understand that the offense is new to him as well, but he should really be picking it up better than a rookie who is coming from the FCS level.

That being said, give credit where it is due here. Wentz is taking his opportunity with the Eagles completely seriously, and while many consider him likely to sit for a season behind the veterans, Wentz is apparently ready to come in and fight for that starting job.

He certainly has the tools to succeed, and if Wentz continues to shine with his ability to pick up the offense and adapt to the NFL game quickly, he could be on his way to becoming the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles as a rookie.

It is too early to be making any sort of conclusions, and Bradford is undoubtedly still the favorite. That being said, Wentz appears ready to push Bradford for the job. If Wentz looks like the better option, the Eagles would be foolish not to make him the starter in 2016.
