In a match that seemed to have it all, Mexico downed Urugay 3-1 in their opening contest of the Copa America Centenario.

The University of Phoenix Stadium was filled to the brim and fans definitely got their money’s worth on Sunday night. Mexico took on Uruguay in their highly anticipated first match of the Copa America Centenario, and delivered on the big stage.

The game got off to quite the start with Hector Herrera opening the scoring in just the fourth minute of play. The Mexicans were looking to make an immediate impact to keep the crowd into the game, and they got just what they were looking for.

Things got even more interesting right before halftime, when the South Americans went down to ten men. Matias Vecino was shown his second yellow just prior to the break and Uruguay was left to play with 10 men for the entire second half.

The Mexican advantage wouldn’t last too long though, as Andres Guardado was also shown a second yellow card in the 73rd minute. Uruguay equalized just a minute later through Diego Godin, and all of a sudden it was game on.

However like so many times in the past, Rafa Marquez came up big for his country and scored an absolute brilliant goal in the 85th minute. He rifled a bullet past Fernando Muslera to give El Tri a crucial 2-1 lead.

Mexico was not done there though, as Herrera added a second on the night to seal  the deal and give his side all three points.

Both Mexico and Uruguay will be in action next on June 9th, with the South Americans taking on Venezuela and Mexico playing Jamaica.
