The Alabama Crimson Tide are aiming to repeat as national champions in 2016 after topping the Clemson Tigers in the championship game last season, a down-to-the-wire shootout at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
While the Crimson Tide will certainly have another outstanding defensive front seven for head coach Nick Saban and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, they might have to lean on a few offensive playmakers a bit more in 2016 to repeat as national champions.
Fortunately for the Crimson Tide, the team has a dynamic playmaker on the outside in true sophomore wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley appears to be the next great vertical threat for Alabama, following in the footsteps of the Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones and the Oakland Raiders’ Amari Cooper.
As a true freshman in 2015, Ridley led the SEC in receptions with 89, finished second in the conference in receiving yards with 1,045, and fifth in touchdowns with seven. Alabama played in 15 games last season, but even so, Ridley’s numbers as a true freshman for a national championship team were remarkable.
With Alabama facing a ton of pressure to win its fifth national championship in eight seasons, here are five reasons Ridley can help the Crimson Tide go back-to-back on the gridiron and become the school’s second Heisman Trophy winner in as many seasons.
