Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn was gifted with a contract extension before the 2016 season gets underway

The college football season for 2016 is fast approaching, and on Monday, the Auburn Tigers made sure they gave their head coach a gift before the campaign gets started. According to AL.com, the school and Gus Malzahn have agreed on a contract extension that will take him through the 2020 season.

As for the terms of the deal, Malzahn will make just a little over 4.7 million per year, with the usual incentives such as postseason bonuses of course.

To say that the tenure of Malzahn at Auburn has been a little rocky might be an understatement. Things got off to a hot start in 2013, where in Malzahn’s first year he guided the Tigers to the BCS National Championship Game where they lost a nail biter to the Florida State Seminoles. Things were looking up for the future after that performance, but the last couple seasons have not been kind to Auburn, mainly because they’ve struggled on the defensive side of the ball.

But, Athletic Director Jay Jacobs has apparently seen enough that he wanted to give Malzahn the benefit of the doubt, at least for this coming season. Should Auburn struggle on the field again here in 2016, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see Auburn pull the trigger on letting him go.

In three seasons as the head coach at Auburn, Malzahn has a record of 27-13.
