High Salary SP

Zack Greinke-Arizona Diamondbacks (11,900): Greinke is coming off one of his best starts of his first season with Arizona.  He held the Astros scoreless for seven innings last Thursday striking out a season-high 11. He has at least seven strikeouts in seven of his last 11 starts and has won five of his last six starts.  Greinke is in a good matchup against the Rays, but it has been a struggle for him pitching at home with most of his best outings coming away from Chase Field.  Greinke is a big name and can turn in a dominant game, but his home numbers are cause for a bit of concern in sinking almost 12K into him tonight.

Kyle Hendricks-Chicago Cubs (10,800): Hendricks gets a great matchup against the Phillies tonight who are second-to-last in runs scored in the Major Leagues and were shut down last night by Jon Lester.  Hendricks will look to continue their offensive struggles tonight after picking up back-to-back wins in his last two starts to get to 4-4 on the year.  Both wins came in impressive outings as he pitched a complete game against the Phillies striking out seven and allowing just one run and then allowed just two runs on three hits in eight innings to the Dodgers.  He totaled 35.2 and 27 fantasy points in those two outings, and he’ll look to put together another big game tonight even though he’s on the road.  He doesn’t have the elite strikeout stuff of the names above him on this list, but he does have a good matchup and some positive momentum as he takes the hill tonight.

Cole Hamels-Texas Rangers (10,300): I actually feel more confident with Hamels than Greinke tonight based on matchup and opponent.  Hamels and the Rangers are at home where they are 22-9 coming into tonight’s game.  He’ll face the Astros who lead the MLB in strikeouts.  When he took on the ‘Stros three starts ago, Hamels was superb striking out 11 in eight innings on his way to a 37.8-fantasy-point performance.  He has at least 14 fantasy points in seven of his last ten starts and has improved his ERA to 3.39 with a 1.32 WHIP. He’s averaging over a strikeout per inning, and at home against the Astros he should be lined up for another good game tonight.

Joe Ross-Washington Nationals (9,700): Ross and the Nats head to the Windy City to face the White Sox tonight, and Ross’s DraftKings value takes a huge jump all the way up to 9.7K.  Ross has been pitching like an Ace lately, though, so the increase is understandable.  He has called just one run in each off is last two starts going seven innings in each to pick up a pair of wins and lower his ERA on the season to 2.37.  He doesn’t have great strikeout numbers like Hamels or deGrom but he is in a good matchup and showing great form as he takes the hill against the White Sox tonight. ∗∗

Jacob deGrom-New York Mets (9,500): DeGrom could be an under-owned play tonight since early this morning the “probable” was Steven Matz according to DraftKings.  DeGrom will start in Game 2 of the double-header after Matz pitches this afternoon.  There are some issues with eligibility due to the double-header, but if DraftKings includes the second game (and not the first obviously) I like him as a nice option. DeGrom hasn’t picked up a win since April although most of that is due to lack of run support.  He has been especially dialed in lately with at least seven K’s in each of his last three starts.  In his last outing he fanned ten White Sox while allowing just one run but took a hard-luck no-decision in a game the Mets lost late. He has four quality starts in his last five outings, and he’ll take his impressive 2.62 ERA and 1.16 WHIP to the mound as he faces the Pirates for the first time this season.
