As the third leg of the 2016 Triple Crown series, this year’s Belmont Stakes showcases hardened campaigners like Exaggerator and Lani, and maiden special weight winners Forever d’Oro and Seeking the Soul. Can Brody’s Cause, the only horse in the field to have beaten Exaggerator, find it in himself to prevail? Will Exaggerator be able to handle the Belmont’s grinding distance of one and one-half miles?
While this year’s Belmont lacks the drama of a Triple Crown winner and the aura of American Pharoah, this crop has set some fast fractions including breaking the record with the fastest opening quarter in the Preakness. Yes, even faster than Secretariat’s Preakness opening quarter!
One of the factors on the Belmont’s outcome, to be determined Wednesday, is the starting post draw, webcast live at NYRA.com starting at noon. The Belmont Stakes undercard will draw first, with the Belmont drawn around 12:40 p.m. After the positions are drawn, a racing analyst will present the morning line odds for the entries.
The position from which a horse starts can be favorable to his outcome or not. Horses drawing the first starting stall, next to the inner rail can get squeezed back or bumped around and on to the rail. Starting from the far outside means the horse will have to dart over closer to the rail, encountering adjacent starters in the fray of traffic.
