The USMNT’s chances of getting to the Copa America’s knockout stage suffered a big blow when DeAndre Yedlin received a second yellow card.

The USMNT can’t afford to lose points against Paraguay. With Colombia’s spot in the Copa America’s knockout stage affirmed with six points at the top, the US are only ahead of Costa Rica and Paraguay by two points.

They started out on the right foot, controlling the first half before Clint Dempsey added to his goal tally by getting his second of the tournament.

Even though they’ve played a great game so far, they’re still only ahead by one goal, and had the tides turned when DeAndre Yedlin received his second yellow of the game, reducing the US down to 10 men:

This isn’t the first time Yedlin has been in trouble. In the opening game, he committed a handball which resulted in a penalty and putting his team down 2-0. Now that he’s been sent off, Paraguay are playing with a lot more tempo and look like they could score. They know they need a win to go through.

If the USMNT ends up drawing, they can still make it to the knockout stages if Colombia beats Costa Rica. Even if Costa Rica wins, their superior goal difference – thanks to a 4-0 pasting of Costa Rica – should see them through. However, not having Yedlin in the quarterfinal, and going into it with just one win out of three would be less than ideal.

They need to be able to see this result through so they can have something to build on heading into the knockout stage.
