Copa America: Who does USMNT play in quarterfinals?
By David Rouben
The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa America, but who will await them?
Heading into the Copa America, the USMNT were given one of the toughest draws of the tournament. They had to face Colombia, the third-ranked team in the world, and Costa Rica who shocked the world with their deep run two years ago in the World Cup.
While they didn’t beat Colombia, they shelled Costa Rica 4-0 and beat Paraguay 1-0 to get into the knockout stages. Two clean sheets is something good to build upon, and it should give them confidence in the quarterfinals. However, they could face a really tough out in the first elimination round of the Copa America.
There’s an outside chance that the USMNT could win group A, which would only happen if Costa Rica beats Colombia. If they do that, the US would travel to Seattle, and play in front of some of the most passionate soccer fans in the States against the second-placed team in Group B. Peru currently occupy that spot, although they’re tied with Brazil on points. And there’s still a chance Ecuador could sneak into the second spot.
However, the more likely outcome is that the US will place second in their group behind Colombia. That would result in them facing the winner of Group B in New Jersey. Even though two points separate three sides, Brazil should emerge the winners of that group, if only because they padded their goal differential with their 7-1 win over Haiti.
USMNT fans should be cheering hard for Costa Rica to beat Colombia. As of right now, this team does not have what it takes to match up against Brazil, but they should like their chances against Peru or Ecuador. However, the American Outlaws are a great advantage to have, and they will do their very best to will their team to victory.
