The Pittsburgh Penguins are Stanley Cup champions after drowning the Sharks in Game 6.

2. 92. 1. 120. Final

It had been a wildly rough stretch for the Pittsburgh Penguins — a team good enough on paper to be perennial Stanley Cup favorites every year but never good enough on the ice to make it happen.

But after years of toiling away, the Pens are champions once again, and the we once again live in a world where Sidney Crosby is on the top of the hockey world.

Credit goes to the San Jose Sharks though, who failed to take this series the distance but managed to make enough of a series out of things that we were all glued to the television. San Jose had no business being in the Cup, but they finally got hot long enough to make the run we saw them almost make so many times before.

But there could only be one team who exorcised their playoff demons and it was — frankly — the better team. Say what you will about the Pens easy as hell road out of the Eastern Conference, but they fought hard for this Stanley Cup win.

Sure, they rolled through a bracket that had a soul-searching Caps team and a beat up Lightning squad in their way, but the Penguins came out scorching in the Stanley Cup Final and won it far and square.

Three stars

Logan Couture

Martin Jones was the best player on the ice in Game 6, despite the two goals allowed, but he was given a temporary assist by Logan Couture. The Sharks’ center drilled an equalizer in the second period that electrified the home crowd and made us believe that this could be a series that might go a full seven.

Kris Letang

He didn’t score the only goal of the game but he scored what ended up being the game winner. Letang’s goal came just 79-seconds after Logan Couture’s second period equalizer and ended up being the difference in a game that saw goals at a premium for both teams.

Matt Jones

Say what you will about the Penguins winning the Cup, but Martin Jones did his damnedest to make sure the Sharks were as alive as they could have been in Game 6. Down 2-1 in the third, Jones was making unbelievable saves that made net minders at home blush, and it wasn’t his fault San Jose managed just one shot on goal in the entire final period.
