NBA free agency: 5 destinations for David West
By John Buhler
Would West consider returning to the Spurs in 2016-17 after opting out of his contract with San Antonio on Monday? If the Spurs are willing to give him more than the $1.55 million he was set to make, he should.
There isn’t a winning basketball culture quite like what the Spurs have cooking with Gregg Popovich as head coach and R.C. Buford as general manager. Yes, the Spurs roster is starting to look old with the Big Three of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili well past their prime, but San Antonio still has two of the league’s top 20 players in Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge very much in the prime.
There’s even talk that the Spurs are one of two teams that can realistically challenge the Thunder in signing top free agent Kevin Durant this summer. With a new big three in San Antonio featuring Aldridge, Durant, and Leonard, the Spurs could emerge as the favorite to win it all over the Golden State Warriors.
It’s unlikely that West will be able to get more money from the Spurs after opting out. 2015-16 may not have turned out how West would have liked, but re-signing with San Antonio is a smart destination for West should he want to go out on top as a winner.
Next: 2. Portland Trail Blazers.
