David Wright’s season could come to an end if he undergoes surgery on his neck.

David Wright has had a tough past two seasons. In 2015, he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and missed the majority of the year. He was healthy enough to come back in the late summer and join the chase to the World Series, but didn’t look like the same player. This also sent for the early part of 2016, as Wright was only batting .226.

In May, Captain America went down with a herniated disc in his neck. It was thought he would need nearly two months of rest before being able to rehab, but this could cause Wright to miss the whole season. He has met with his own doctor and the Mets medical staff about undergoing surgery on the herniated disc, which would end his season, according to SNY. Wright’s decision on to undergo surgery or not may be known in a few days.

Despite the decline in production, losing Wright for the remainder of the 2016 season would hurt. They would have to continue to rely on Wilmer Flores, Ty Kelly and Kelly Johnson taking turns at the hot corner. None of them are thrilling options, but it may be the hand the Mets are forced to deal with.

It’s always possible the Mets look outside the organization for help. They’ve already done this with Johnson and James Loney. These two players were low-cost options, though. Whether the Amazin’s are willing to go out and get a bigger bat remains to be seen.
