Although we are still in group play of the EURO Championship, Slovakian Marek Hamšík scored a potential goal-of-the-tournament against Russia.

Marek Hamšík came into the tournament having a lot of weight on his shoulders to carry Slovakia. After having a rough first game against Wales in their first game, Hamšík stepped up and brought his team the victory in their second game against Russia.

He assisted Slovakia’s first goal that put them up 1-0. Then, minutes later, he virtually put Russia away with an absolutely stunning goal. He went and got the short corner around the corner of the 18-yard box. He turned, took on a defender and finished off the post and in.

He did it in the 45th minute, sending Russia to the half down 2-0 and with virtually no hope of making any sort of a comeback.

Dimitri Payet and Hamšík’s goals are definitely up there as the top two goals of the tournament up till now. Payet’s goal was a cracker and was with his opposite foot, but Hamšík’s goal was ridiculous. The degree of difficulty for him to bend it around the keeper and off the post is something that I think trumps Payet’s winner for France.

As the tournament moves on, hopefully we will see more stunning goals like this one. For now, though, Hamšík’s goal stands out as the best of the tournament and gives Slovakia hope of going through into the knockout stages.
