Far and away the most logical choice to immediately replace Ventura would be current White Sox bench coach Rick Renteria, who managed the cross-town Chicago Cubs in 2014.

Renteria is a baseball lifer who was a successful manager in the minor leagues for many years. He was promoted to the big league staff of the San Diego Padres in 2008 and was the team’s bench coach from 2011-2013. Renteria also managed Team Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Getting the manager job with the Cubs in 2014 is Renteria’s only experience as a big league manager, and while he only led the team for one season, Renteria did a great job in developing the young Cubs.

He would likely still be the manager on the North Side if Joe Maddon would not have become available for the Cubs. Theo Epstein and company seemed to be happy with Renteria’s performance, but Maddon is arguably the best manager in the game, and the Cubs could not pass up on that opportunity.

Renteria knows this team well and has successful big league managing experience. He would undoubtedly be a strong choice for the White Sox.
