The Atlanta Braves are a bad team this season, but on Wednesday, All-Star First Baseman Freddie Freeman grabbed the headlines for a positive reason, hitting for Atlanta’s first cycle since 2008.

With his single in the eleventh inning, Freddie Freeman became the first Atlanta Braves player to hit for the cycle in eight years. The last to accomplish the feat was Mark Kotsay, who completed the cycle against the Cubs on August 14, 2008. His double in the seventh inning gave him the cycle and was also his 1500th hit of his career.

For Freeman, he needed extra innings to complete the feat, but in doing so, became only the third Braves player to hit for the cycle in the last 100 years. A two-time All-Star, Freeman has had an up and down year in 2016, as he battles with being a very good player on a very bad team.

Freeman doubled in the third inning, tripled in the fourth and hit his 11th homer in the sixth, setting the stage for his at-bat in the eleventh. After his single, the Braves loaded the bases, but could not cash in the run.

The cycle is the first for Major League Baseball in 2016.

A second round selection of the Braves in the 2007 Major League Draft, Freeman has hit 114 home runs in his seven seasons in the big leagues, while accumulating a .282 batting average. He is signed through 2021 as part of his 8-year/$135 million dollar deal he signed after the 2013 season.

The Braves are by far the worst team in baseball this season, as they have won only 18 of their first 64 games. In the process, they have fired their manager Fredi Gonzalez and are currently 22 games out of first place.

Freeman’s cycle could be the lone bright spot for the team this season.
