Dirk Nowitzki will probably retire with the Dallas Mavericks, but if he leaves Dallas here are five reasons it should be with the Golden State Warriors.

According to Tim Kawakami of the San José Mercury-News, the Golden State Warriors are reportedly going after what many deemed as an impossible free agent target: face of the Dallas Mavericks franchise and top 50 all-time player in NBA history power forward Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki has played for the Mavericks since being the No. 9 pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. He’s won league MVP in 2007, guided Dallas to its only NBA Championship to date in 2011 as Finals MVP, and will one day have a statue outside of American Airlines Center.

So why do the Warriors think they can pry the sharpshooting veteran German big man from his adopted hometown of Dallas, Texas? Because Golden State has a need for a veteran stretch five and he offers something Dallas probably can’t: realistic opportunities to win another NBA Championship.

Could Nowitzki carve out a role with the Warriors as a starting center or star coming off the deep Warriors bench? Absolutely, but would he want to be the fourth best player on a championship contender or continuing to ride it out with owner Mark Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle in Dallas? Nowitzki’s loyalty to the Mavericks has made him untouchable in free agency, but if he leaves Dallas here are five reasons it should be to join the Warriors.
