Copa America: Argentina’s Ezequiel Lavezzi suffers scary injury
Argentina’s Ezequiel Lavezzi has a goal on the day but went tumbling over the wall in the second half of the semifinal matchup against the USA.
Argentina is up 3-0 over the USA in the first semifinal matchup of the Copa America, but that doesn’t mean the Lionel Messi-led squad is taking it easy.
Playing hard until the end is indicative of a great squad, but a lack of awareness may have led to a bad injury for Argentina.
Ezequiel Lavezzi was trying to bring down the ball on his chest when he went tumbling over the wall.
He remained down and was eventually taken off on a stretcher, although he was conscious and was sitting in the stretcher rather than being completely out of it.
Lavezzi started the scoring with an early goal, which was assisted by Messi. The goal put the US down 1-0 and the Argentinians have never looked back.
But with an appearance in the final likely on the way, Argentina may be without Lavezzi after that fall. He was able to gather himself, but he may not be able to play Sunday because of an injury to his arm, which seemed to be what was being looked at once he was up after the fall.
This injury could cause him to miss the next game, but he is lucky to have avoided a serious neck injury. Falling over the wall backwards set him up to land on his neck, but professional athletes have a better sense of what to do when falling compared to us regular people who suffer terrible injuries with each fall.
There is always the commentary of players faking and exaggerating injuries, but Lavezzi seems to have done some damage to his arm after that fall. It is still early in terms of the injury being reported, but it did not look great at first glance.
