NBA Draft 2016: 5 players Philadelphia 76ers need to target
4. Denzel Valentine – Michigan State
Speaking of other players who quite literally did it all for their team in college, Denzel Valentine unquestionably qualifies in that regard in his final year with the Michigan State Spartans. However, there are several factors working against him coming into the 2016 NBA Draft and he’s likely to slip in to the later part of the first round. With the 76ers sitting there, they have to be licking their chops hoping he falls.
To get it out of the way, one of the biggest issues with Valentine other than his age in relation to the young top prospects in this draft is that there is a bit of an injury concern. Many scouts have warned that Valentine might already be somewhat damaged goods on his way into the NBA and that rightfully scares some teams and might cause them to shy away from drafting him.
However, Valentine showed that he’s truly a player that can do anything asked of him at his position. Even if he’s not a lockdown NBA defender, he’s savvy and smart enough to get by while being a great rebounder and ball-handler for his position and being able to both facilitate and score at a high level. If the 76ers can feel confident that he’s not severely injured coming into this, he’s a player who’d be a nice piece in a shallow backcourt.
