Much to the chagrin of the loyal fans of the Dallas Mavericks, this team is about to be one of the worst five teams in the NBA. Dirk Nowitzki has maybe three more years left and he might not even spend his last days in the NBA with Dallas. He’s opting out of his deal with the Mavericks to test free agency this summer.

While players seem to like playing for owner Mark Cuban and head coach Rick Carlisle, the Mavericks are quickly becoming a roster full of also-ran players, barely qualifying for Western Conference Playoff berths.

Though an eventual rebuilding effort post-Nowitzki might be inevitable, signing a player like Rose in 2017 free agency could delay it for a year or more. Joining the 2017-18 Mavericks would be another place that Rose could conceivably follow in Williams’ footsteps: he’ll be a free agent that summer, too.

Given that Dallas portrays itself as a marquee free agent destination, Cuban’s pride might be hurt if nobody wants to play with an aging Nowitzki. This may cause the internet billionaire and television star on Shark Tank to overspend on another player past his prime in Rose. If Rose is interested in one last great payday, it’ll be hard to top what Cuban could offer him with the Mavericks.
