5 best head coaching options for Baylor Bears in 2017
By John Buhler
How does one head coach with only two career victories on his résumé go about getting a Power 5 gig like Baylor? SMU Mustangs head coach Chad Morris could conceivably do just that.
Morris went 2-10 (1-7) in 2015 as his first year as head coach at the infamous Methodist school in Dallas. SMU experienced bowl games under former head coach June Jones, but the program is still largely snakebitten by the Death Penalty instituted three decades ago.
What Morris does have going for him is that he still has tremendous credibility as an offensive coordinator for the Clemson Tigers (2011-14) under head coach Dabo Swinney. Morris also wouldn’t have to leave Texas to receive a promotion either, as he would just have to relocate from the big city in Dallas to the small college town of Waco.
Morris perhaps acted to swiftly to become a head coach last season. While he was probably ready for a gig of that nature, why did he choose frankly a cursed one in SMU? He can still run a great offense in taking over a Power 5 program in Baylor.
With the sexual assault scandal hurting recruiting at Baylor, it would be a good time for Morris to improve his head coaching chops while rebuilding a fallen program with the Bears. It can’t be worse than what he’s going through at SMU currently, right?
