NBA Free Agency Rumors: David Lee to the Warriors?
In a recent video with TMZ Sports, David Lee admitted he is trying to work things out to return to the Golden State Warriors.
Before the Golden State Warriors officially sign Kevin Durant, they will have some cap issues to resolve. Trading Andrew Bogut to the Dallas Mavericks and getting rid of Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli will create the space needed to add Durant. They will, however, have to rebuild their bench on the fly. That shouldn’t be much of a problem, especially not when veterans like David Lee would welcome the opportunity to join the Warriors.
Lee’s return to the Warriors is not a sure thing, and he would likely have to take the veteran minimum in order for the Warriors to re-acquire a guy who helped them win the NBA title in 2014-15.
The Warriors would benefit from having Lee back. Trading Bogut to the Mavericks means that the Warriors will need depth and size inside. The importance of the rim protector has diminished over the past few seasons. However, the Warriors’ lack of quality rim protectors allowed the Cleveland Cavaliers to fight back and win the Finals. Golden State seems to have realized that and will not make the same mistake again.
Lee and Zaza Pachulia, who reportedly agreed to terms with the Warriors on July 4, should give the Warriors solid depth and size. They will need more veterans to accept the minimum, especially with the Warriors having to use their entire room exception to add Pachulia, but they won’t have much trouble finding people to join them.
