The French scored this incredible goal on Germany in the Euro 2016 Semifinals.
It’s been a crazy Euro 2016 tournament, so it would make sense that the semis would be similarly crazy. However, the first goal of the France-Germany semifinal came on an innocuous penalty kick.
Antoine Griezmann faked out Manuel Neuer, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, on this penalty cup that put the French solidly in the lead.
Germany’s road to the semifinals has had a little turbulence. They didn’t allow a goal until the quarterfinals against Italy, taking a tie in the group stage against Poland and wins everywhere else. The German team is definitely strong defensively, but Bastien Schweinsteiger and Mesut Ozil still bring strong attacking power to the reigning World Cup champions.
The French are prolific in their own right, boasting a high-flying offense. France has scored at least two goals in every game they’ve played save for a 0-0 tie with Switzerland in group stages. The French banished everyone’s favorite underdog, Iceland, 5-2 in the quarterfinals. While everyone was sad to see Iceland go, the French were definitely the better team, scoring multiple times before Iceland could get an on target shot off.
The French are led by attacking midfielder Griezmann, who scored, and striker Oliver Giroud. Paul Pogba and Laurent Koscielny are also names to watch.
This match is far from over, but striking first is exactly what France needed. The German defense is the best in Euro 2016, and now they’re that much closer to heading to the finals to face Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.
