The Winnipeg Jets have announced that center Mathieu Perreault has signed a four-year extension worth $16.5 million. It will go into effect starting in 2017.

One of the problems with free agency is that it tends to mess up how players view their contract year. That was something that the Winnipeg Jets and Mathieu Perreault, who was scheduled to be a free agent after next season, mutually wanted to take care of this offseason.

The two sides have agreed to a four-year extension worth $16.5 million. Perreault’s extension will go into effect starting in the 2017-18 season and he will have a cap hit of $4.125 million.

From NHL.com:

"Perreault, 28, is entering his third season with the Jets after signing a three-year deal as a free agent in 2014. Last season, the native of Drummondville, Qc had 41 points (9G, 32A) in 71 games. It was the second-consecutive season he had 41 points for the Jets."

The Jets are very wise to take care of Perreault’s extension now rather than later. Fans saw with the Steven Stamkos saga how extension talks going into the season can have a negative impact on a player and his team. Perreault is an important part of their future moving forward.

While Perreault has had durability issues (last season was his first ever season with more than 70 games played), he has proven to be a consistent contributor when healthy. He had 41 points (nine goals and 32 assists) last season in 71 games for the Jets. Perreault has a career high of 43 points, set during the 2013-14 season with the Anaheim Ducks.
