Even though he and Dwyane Wade have joined the team, Rajon Rondo readily admits that the Chicago Bulls belong to Jimmy Butler.
On Thursday, the Chicago Bulls officially announced the free agent signing of Rajon Rondo. While meeting with the press, the former Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings point guard revealed the pecking order for the Bulls.
Rondo stated that the Bulls now have “three alphas”. However, he also made sure to let the sports world know that Chicago still belongs to Jimmy Butler. He’s the leader and star of the team.
In showing some humility, Rondo also mentioned that Dwyane Wade was second in command, in his eyes. The former Kentucky Wildcats star didn’t exactly put himself at the third position, as he mentioned that the Bulls have a pecking order. However, when he stated that there were three alphas, the belief is that Rondo considers himself to be the third guy.
The Bulls did not officially reveal the terms of the agreement with Rondo. However, reports have surfaced that the 30-year-old guard signed a two-year deal worth approximately $28 million.
Rondo stated that he was very confident that he could coexist with Wade and Butler. While playing with the Mavericks, critics noticed that Rondo wasn’t exactly able to get along with his teammates or head coach Rick Carlisle. In his defense, Rondo actually played just fine with DeMarcus Cousins when he was with the Kings last season.
To further solidify his belief, Rondo pointed out that he played with Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett when he was with Boston. Those three were able to lead the Celtics to the NBA Championship because they were willing to sacrifice for one another.
On Wednesday night, Wade announced his decision that he was leaving the Miami Heat for the Bulls, his hometown team. The former Marquette star had grown disenchanted with team president Pat Riley because he felt that he was owed more loyalty. Chicago only offered approximately $7 million more than what Miami had on the table for Wade.
If Rondo can truly be a sidekick with the Bulls, then Butler is going to continue developing into a superstar in the NBA.
