Serena Williams defeated Angelique Gerber to win Wimbledon.

It took a few tries but Serena Williams finally captured her 22nd Grand Slam title to tie Steffi Graf for the most in the open era. With some of the best women’s tennis players in attendance from Billie Jean King to Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams won in straight sets to win her seventh Wimbledon after handling Angelique Kerber, 7-5, 6-3.

Serena improved to 26-4 in Grand Slam matchups vs. top-five opponents for an .867 winning percentage, which is the best among women in the open era.

She had everything working in her game today from her serve to her volleys but credit her opponent because Kerber was right there with her for the two sets. She didn’t steal a set fromSerenaa but she battled the entire match and made Serena work for her seventh Wimbledon championship and 22nd overall.

Her dominance on the tour after she turned 30 has been nothing short of remarkable as she won her ninth Grand Slam title today since her 30th birthday. She tied Graf today for the most Grand Slams in the open era and with Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova in attendance, I think Serena Williams has officially passed those three in terms of overall greatness.

Serena Williams is the greatest women’s tennis player of all-time.

Margaret Court won 24 Grand Slam titles and that is really the only milestone left for Serena left to accomplish.

In the meantime, Serena will move on to her doubles match with her older sister Venus Williams as she looks to add more hardware to her trophy case.
