MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades Arizona Diamondbacks should make
4. Trade Yasmany Tomas
The Yasmany Tomas experiment has failed. He hasn’t been a complete bust in Arizona, but it’s obvious that he shouldn’t be a starter. The Diamondbacks’ biggest weakness this year has been their consistently inconsistent outfield defense. Tomas is the worst offender. He has a decent bat, as his 13 home runs in the first half show, but it’s not close to good enough to justify his terrible defense. Tomas is still relatively young at 24 years old, and Arizona should look to trade him while he remains an intriguing prospect.
The Baltimore Orioles are perhaps the most likely destination. They have had a revolving door of outfielders and designated hitters over the past three seasons, and have reportedly expressed interest in signing Tomas. If the Diamondbacks could get someone like catching prospect Chance Sisco or outfielder Mike Yastrzemski from the Orioles for Tomas, it would look like a good deal for both teams.
Tomas hasn’t progressed as expected, but his bat is intriguing enough for American League teams to be willing to bid for him. If Arizona can improve their team by trading him, which they likely can, that would be a great move for them.
