3. Chicago White Sox

Once again, the White Sox find themselves in a difficult position at the trade deadline. The core is there for Chicago to challenge for a title, but it hasn’t seen the results on the field over the past two or three years.

After a hot start, the White Sox have faded to 45-43 and are probably looking at a Wild Card berth as the best case scenario. Still, adding James Shields in early June indicated the White Sox are going to be buyers this year, and one more big move could be in the works.

While adding more pitching help might prove difficult, the White Sox have a chance to find a major upgrade in the corner outfield. The team has been stubborn about playing Avisail Garcia, but the 25-year-old owns a career mark of -2.6 WAR per FanGraphs, and J.B. Shuck doesn’t need to be getting regular at-bats for a contender.

Gonzalez could take over one of the corner outfield spots and allow the White Sox to move Adam Eaton back to center, improving the offense as a whole. Chicago needs a capable power hitter of Gonzalez’s quality, as Jose Abreu has declined quickly.

The best part of a potential deal for the White is that Gonzalez would be able to help next year as well. Chicago needs to do whatever it can to make a run at the postseason while Chris Sale and Jose Quintana are effective and cheap.
