According to Adam Schefter, Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Desmond Bryant is likely out for the entire 2016 season due to a torn pectoral muscle.

The Cleveland Browns received some bad news early on July 13 as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that defensive tackle Desmond Bryant will likely miss the entire 2016 season due to a torn pectoral muscle.

This shortens the Browns’ defensive depth even more after linebacker Armonty Bryant’s four-game suspension to start the season. It also likely puts to rest any chance that the Browns had of making the playoffs.

Bryant led the Browns in 2015 with six sacks, a career high for the seven-year veteran from Harvard, in 14 games. An undrafted free agent, he spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Oakland Raiders before joining the Browns in 2013. Bryant has started 41 games in his first three seasons with the Browns. He had a total of 33 tackles in 2015 and set a career high with 49 tackles in 2014. Bryant also forced a fumble in 2015.

The Browns defense ranked 28th in the NFL in sacks in 2015 with 28. Bryant had six of those sacks, so that’s a significant loss for the Browns. He reportedly injured himself during a workout late last week. John Hughes III, second-year defensive tackle Xavier Cooper, undrafted free agent Nile Lawrence-Stample, and Jamie Meder are among the players who are expected to compete to replace Bryant’s spot on the defensive line. Replacing Bryant will be a tough thing for the Browns to overcome.
