Recent MLB rumors have touched on the contract situation between the Toronto Blue Jays and Edwin Encarnacion. Is a deal close?

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, there have been plenty of MLB rumors about possible moves. The Toronto Blue Jays are in contention this season, but they have been trying to address the contract situation of one of their stars.

Edwin Encarnacion is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, making his future in Toronto uncertain. According to Jon Heyman, Encarnacion is putting a halt to those talks to focus on the remainder of the season, as the Blue Jays fight for a playoff spot in the American League.

Since arriving in Toronto, Encarnacion has become one of the best power hitters in baseball. This season has been no different for Encarnacion, as he totaled 23 home runs and 80 RBIs in the first half of the season. The offensive numbers that Encarnacion has put up so far for the Blue Jays have helped put them into contention in a strong AL East, but they will also affect his asking price in the offseason.

With the 2017 free agent class being rather weak, Encarnacion could be looking at a really nice payday from someone. Encarnacion is leading all of the majors in RBIs, eight ahead of second-place David Ortiz.

The decision to halt contract negotiations is a wise one for Encarnacion, who can now focus on having an even better second half of the season for the Blue Jays.
