Juventus sign Mehdi Benatia on loan
By David Rouben
Juventus have signed Mehdi Benatia from Bayern Munich on loan with an option to buy after this season.
After two seasons at Bayern Munich, Mehdi Benatia is going back to Serie A. He was a high profile signing by the Bavarian side, but he could never nail down a starting position in Bayern’s crowded back-line. He had to compete with the likes of Jerome Boateng, Javi Martinez, and Holger Badstuber, and now that Mats Hummels has joined them, he became surplus to requirements.
Meanwhile, Juventus continue their outstanding business in this transfer window, as Benatia joins Dani Alves and Miralem Pjanic as newcomers. Even though they lost Morata and could lose Paul Pogba, they’re still the class of Serie A and are a formidable outfit.
However, Benatia is leaving one crowded back-line in Bayern Munich only to join another crowded back-line in Juventus. He’ll have to compete with the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, and Andrea Barzagli for a starting spot. However, he’s only there on a one-year loan, so it’s low-risk, and potentially high-reward.
It remains to be seen if this will result in a Juventus defender getting sold, but Benatia is in a good environment, and he can only improve the team. This is another good move from a Juventus team that’s expected to lose some players, but is still re-tooling for success this season.
