Jordan Spieth captivated the golf world in 2015, and despite another solid year in 2016, he feels the expectations are “unfair.”

Jordan Spieth had an incredible 2015 season on the PGA Tour, winning the Masters and U.S. Open, while coming within one stroke of a playoff at The Open at St. Andrews. This year, Spieth has had a solid season by almost any standard, but people continue to pile on the expectations. For Spieth, it seems a bit unfair.

“It’s been tough given I think it’s been a solid year and I think, had last year not happened, I’d be having a lot of positive questions,” Spieth said during the telecast of The Open Championship after shooting a third-round 72. “Instead, most of the questions I get are comparing to last year and therefore negative because it’s not to the same standard.”

Spieth continued:

“So that’s almost tough to then convince myself that you’re having a good year when the questions I get make me feel like it’s not. So that’s a bit unfair to me, but don’t feel sorry for me. I’ll still be OK. But I would appreciate if people would look at the positives over comparing to maybe hopefully what would happen to me a few times in my career a year, like last year. It seems a bit unfair at 22 to be expecting something like that all the time.”

As dominant as Spieth has been early in his career in Major championships, it is clear to see that he has struggled a bit lately. Justin Ray, a senior researcher for the Golf Channel, tweeted this out on Saturday.

The bottom line is Spieth has not broken par in a round in any Major this year, so the questions are warranted. Still, he has performed just as well as any golfer on tour during the two Majors before The Open, finishing second at the PGA Championship, and third at the Masters.

He is only 22-years-old, and people are looking at him as the next Tiger Woods. He has a long way to go, but he has the talent to do some wonderful things in golf. If he can focus on his play, and not the media, he will be fine.
