The Big 12 expansion rumors have been put to rest … for now.

According to a report from USA Today’s George Schroeder, the Big 12 is unlikely to expand for the next few years.

Expansion has been the hot topic around Big 12 circles for the past couple of years. There are many who don’t believe the conference can survive at 10 teams, and need to expand to at least 12. The only problem with this is, who does the Big 12 add? Who would actually bring lasting value to the conference?

Others say there’s nothing wrong with being at 10 teams. To those, there are some burning questions that mainly center around what happens to the lower-revenue schools if the deep pockets of the SEC and the B1G come knocking for Texas or Oklahoma? Many traditional Power 5 schools would become homeless almost immediately.

With Houston maybe considering a move to the Pac-12, the Big 12 is also calling their bluff by not expanding. There might not be anyone that wants into the Big 12 more than Houston, a former Southwest Conference member. There will likely not be any way Houston gets added into the Big 12 due to TV money that the Cougars would bring in, but that hasn’t stopped Houston fans from lobbying and hoping their little hearts out.

At this rate, the Big 12 will dissolve in less than 10 years. Texas can go independent if they want. Oklahoma is an enticing prospect for any conference. High revenue schools like Texas Tech and Kansas will be attractive, football success be damned.

Regardless of what happens, someone is going to get burned.
