On July 21 in San Antonio, it will be “Tim Duncan Day”

The city of San Antonio is known for two things: The Alamo and Tim Duncan.

Duncan quietly exited the NBA recently with his retirement from the game of basketball and officially ended his soon-to-be Hall of Fame career that spanned almost 20 years.

But, the city of San Antonio won’t let Duncan go too quietly and they shouldn’t.

On July 21, San Antonio will declare the day be named after Duncan.

The tweet came from the account San Antonio’s mayor, Ivy R. Taylor, and she encouraged Spurs fans to wear the team’s gear; preferably stuff with the No. 21 all over it. Flannel shirts will be probably be accepted as Duncan-type gear as well.

Recently, a local BBQ restaurant in San Antonio had a 15-piece fried chicken deal priced at $21.21 in honor of Duncan’s retirement from the Spurs.

There’s no doubt that the Spurs will have their own festivities for Duncan. He’ll have plenty of camera time with a jersey retirement, old teammates wishing him the best in a ceremony, Gregg Popovich telling jokes and he’ll likely get a statue outside of the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

If a statue of Duncan is not in the works yet, it should be.

The NBA’s landscape is going to look different next season and beyond without Duncan and long-time Los Angeles Lakers great Kobe Bryant on the hardwood together. Each player spent their entire careers with the franchises that drafted them.

As for the Spurs themselves, Duncan’s absence will be felt, but it’s the Spurs. They’re going to win 50+ games. They’re going to make the playoffs and they’ll make a run at another title.

This is what they and Duncan did for 19 years. It’s not breaking news.
