The Boston Celtics are adding depth with the signing of Gerald Green

It is not quite the homecoming of LeBron James a few years ago, but Gerald Green is heading back to the team he started his career with. Green was the 18th pick of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, and as reported by the Sean Deveney of the Sporting News, he will be back in Boston for the 2016 season.

Green played his first two seasons in Boston before he was one of the major pieces in the Kevin Garnett trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Green spent the next nine years playing for seven different teams, including two years spent playing in Russia.

Last season, he played 22 minutes per game and averaged about nine points per game as a bench scorer for the Miami Heat. With his veteran presence and playoff experience, and it will be interesting to see how a deep Celtics team uses him.

Avery Bradley, James Young and RJ Hunter are all shooting guards. While he may start ahead of Young and Hunter on the depth chart, both Marcus Smart and Jaylen Brown are expected to get a few minutes at the shooting guard position as well.

Hunter and Young are former first round picks and are both still very young with upside. It will be hard for either to see the floor now if Green is getting big minutes, though. It will be fun to watch head coach Brad Stevens maneuver these rotations and remain competitive while developing younger talent.
