Here are five moves that the Tampa Bay Rays should make at the 2016 MLB trade deadline to try to improve their future.

The Tampa Bay Rays used to be one of the model franchises for a small market team. Despite having an incredibly small market with little to no revenue and being in the same division as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay used to be a successful team.

They didn’t have the star power of the Yankees or Red Sox, but they were able to take advantage of the advantages that they had. All of that disappeared once beloved manager Joe Maddon opted out of his contract and went to the Chicago Cubs.

Now they find themselves at a cross roads. It’s time for them to rebuild and restock and it’s time for them to be smart about it. At the same time, they also must stay competitive enough to keep what fans they do have coming to the ballpark. Tampa Bay needs to look no further than to the other baseball team in Florida (the Miami Marlins) to see how not to run their franchise.

It might seem dark and dreary now, but Tampa Bay could have a bright future if they play their cards right at the MLB trade deadline. Here are five moves that the Rays should make.
