Restricted free agent forward Brayden Schenn has avoided arbitration with the Philadelphia Flyers as the two sides have agreed on a four-year deal.

Going into the 2016 NHL offseason, the Philadelphia Flyers knew that they needed to get forward Brayden Schenn locked up for as long as possible. Scheduled to go to arbitration with Schenn, the Flyers and Schenn were reported to be far about in their respective asking prices. The Flyers have announced that the two sides have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a four-year deal. Schenn will have an annual cap hit of $5.15 million, according to beat writer Dave Isaac.

From NHL.com:

"Schenn is coming off a career year in 2015-16, his fifth season with the Flyers, where he recorded new career-highs in nearly every offensive categories: goals (26), assists (33) and points (59) in 80 regular season games."

The Flyers originally got Schenn when they traded center Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings in 2012. Schenn is a very important part of the Flyers moving forward because of his versatility and his ability to score goals. With Schenn’s deal done, the Flyers seem to be done for the offseason.

$5.15 million a season is a bit of a gamble for the Flyers. They are banking on Schenn continuing to improve and continuing to play an important role in their success. Because the Flyers have a unique cap situation and they have prospects ready to come up as soon as the 2016-17 season, they can afford to overpay a little bit. Keeping Schenn was extremely important for the Flyers and he’s a guy who is worth overpaying for.
