MLB Trade Deadline: 5 best spots for Joey Votto
3. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Los Angeles Dodgers, much like the Texas Rangers, are one of the very few teams who could pull off a trade for Joey Votto. They have both the money and the prospects necessary to trade for Votto. Much like the Rangers, the Dodgers already have a first baseman. Unlike the Rangers, their first baseman, Adrian Gonzalez, is still a pretty darn good player.
Gonzalez has taken a step back in 2016, but he still has an OPS+ of 108 and an OPS of .758. If the Dodgers want to trade for Votto, they will likely have to give up Gonzalez, since there’s no reason for a National League team to have two expensive first basemen. Swapping Gonzalez for Votto could also prevent Los Angeles from having to eat some of Gonzalez’s contract.
Yasiel Puig is another who could be involved in a trade. He’s a relatively cost-effective outfielder who still has a ton of potential. The Reds could gamble on him realizing that potential, at which point they could either trade him for a nice return or keep him. The Dodgers also have a number of top 100 prospects. Cincinnati could easily get at least two of them for Votto.
