MLB Trade Deadline: 5 trades for Ryan Braun
5. Chicago White Sox
This might seem a little farfetched given Chicago’s current position, but this could make sense for both parties. The White Sox are not in contention this year, but the way their roster is constructed suggests they should still be thinking win now.
They have two stud pitchers in Chris Sale and Jose Quintana who will be entering their primes together over the next few years. In addition to those two stars, the White Sox have Melky Cabrera, Jose Abreu, James Shields, Todd Frazier and Adam Eaton all locked up. Those five players have an average age of 30 years old. This is not a team that can afford to wait; they need to get this ship righted by next season.
The easiest way to do that may be to make a splash this summer. The White Sox have a decent rotation, but are still looking for hitters. They are currently starting JB Shuck in the outfield, and have brought up 35-year-old Justin Morneau to DH. It is safe to say Braun would be an upgrade in either person now, and moving forward.
Braun provides some of the lineup protection Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier desperately need. There has been some talk that the Brewers may include Jonathan Lucroy in a package with Braun, in the hopes of recouping prospects for Lucroy and money for Braun. If there is one team desperate enough to get baited into such a trade, it is the White Sox.
