Welcome Back!

We are back with the stud and steal of the day for MLB DFS! Looking at tonight’s slate of seven baseball games, it can be daunting to decide who deserves a place in your lineup. Knowing which star player is worth the money can be the difference between a winning night and one that ends in failure. However, finding the hidden gems that perform well are equally as important because they can let you spend more on your starting pitchers. This article will touch on one expensive player who is primed to have a big night, and one cheap player whom you wouldn’t normally play but is a great play tonight in MLB DFS.

MLB DFS: The Stud of the Day: David Ortiz, 1B, ($5,600 DK, $4,700)

Heeeeee’s Baaaaaack, that’s right folks the stud of the day is yet again the ageless wonder David Ortiz. Whenever the Red Sox come up against a right-handed pitcher you should heavily consider trying to fit Ortiz into your lineups, today is one of those days. Not only do the Red Sox get to face off against a below average right-handed pitcher (Jered Weaver,) Big Papi has crushed Weaver in almost 40 at bats in his career.

First lets touch on Papi’s numbers versus right-handed pitching this year,

David Ortiz vs. RHP: 84 Games-85/254, .335 AVG, 30!!! 2B’s, 22!!! HR’s, 65 RBI’s

I shouldn’t have to explain just how incredible those numbers are but, you know, 52 extra base hits in 84 games is pretty good. If advanced stats are more your thing, he has a 44.8 hard hit ball % vs. right-handed pitching as well which of course is also amazing.

Now earlier I touched on the fact that Ortiz has loved him some Jered Weaver in the past, lets take a look at the batter vs. pitcher matchup.

Ortiz vs. Weaver: 12/37, .324 AVG, 2 2B’s, 3 HR’s, 8 Runs, 10 RBI’s

These stats are even more impressive considering that a few years ago you would’ve been hard pressed to find a better right-handed pitcher in baseball than Weaver. Now his fastball tops out at about 86 MPH and left-handed batters are giving him absolute fits on the mound.

Weaver vs LHB @ Home: 33/107, .337 AVG, 5 2B’s, 5 HR’s, 18 Earned Runs accounted for.

These splits all point towards Big Papi and the rest of the Red Sox left-handed hitters having a big night in Anaheim. I would look to stack Ortiz with Jackie Bradley Jr. and maybe even Brock Holt as a cheap outfield option. Don’t try to get cute when dealing with David Ortiz vs. below average right handers, he’s in line for a huge night and could single-handedly win you a 50/50, (though he will be highly owned).

Next: The Steal of the Day

MLB DFS: The Steal of the Day: Maikel Franco, 3B, ($3,300 DK/FD)

 .260 AVG, 15 2B’s, 18 HR’s, 55 RBI’s, 38 Runs

.243 AVG, 15 2B’s, 22 HR’s, 59 RBI’s, 46 Runs

The two stat lines above belong to Maikel Franco and Giancarlo Stanton respectively. Stanton is priced at $4,200 on Draftkings while Franco comes in at $3,300 so naturally if I asked you to pick which one you thought was Stanton’s you’d probably pick the second one because of the HR’s… or maybe the first one because of the average… or maybe…

More from FanSided

The thing is, it’s very difficult to figure out which is which because of how similar they are, (Stanton is in fact the second stat line,) what I’m trying to show is just how under priced Franco is tonight facing off against Matt Wisler on the road.

While many hitters perform better in the friendly confines of their home ballpark, Franco is the complete opposite and completely rakes on the road.

Franco @ Home vs. RHP: 32/145, .221 AVG, 5 2B’s, 6 HR’s, 21 RBI’s

Franco on the Road vs. RHP: 40/135, .296 AVG, 6 2B’s, 8 HR’s, 23 RBI’s

While the extra base hits and RBI aren’t drastically different, Franco’s batting average is 75 points higher on the road when facing a right-handed pitcher. This is so drastic that it has to be taken into consideration when deciding whether or not to roster Franco for any given night in DFS. The fact that he gets to face off against Matt Wisler should just be icing on the cake.

Franco vs. Wisler:  5/9, .556 AVG, 2 2B’s, 1 HR, 3 Runs, 2 RBI’s

While it is an extremely limited sample size, an extra base hit every three at bats is impressive and when taken into account with the information above should help give you the confidence to roster Franco tonight.

While it’s almost impossible to roster Jose Fernandez if you use David Ortiz and Jackie Bradley Jr, using Maikel Franco at third base should help you be able to afford someone like Cole Hamels ($9,900), or John Lackey ($10,100), both of whom should have very solid nights. Get some power in your lineup at a great price, use Maikel Franco!
