We like to joke about the Rio Olympics being a dumpster fire, but this time there was an actual fire.

Just 24 hours after the Olympic flame was extinguished by teachers striking over not being paid for two months, a flame has been re-lit in the Olympic Village. The Australian team had to be evacuated from the Olympic Village because of a fire in the basement of their building. This is coming on the heels of the Australian team’s complaints of the Olympic Village being “unlivable”.

The Olympic Village wasn’t deemed ready a few weeks ago, and it apparently isn’t ready now. The Olympics are a wonderful, great thing that has been recently ruined by all the controversy in Rio. Once the Games start, all of the controversy that comes from the buildup will fade for a little bit. After they’re over, we’ll start back up again, but the main focus for the month will be the sports being played.

Rio’s economy is in shambles. It can’t pay its teachers, it can’t pay its police officers, and it has people protesting everything about the Games. No one has any clue how the Rio Olympics will end up, but the early prognosis is not good. You can’t have crazy things like body parts washing up on the shores of beach volleyball and massive amounts of sewage in waters to be used for the Games and expect to be completely functional. It’s looking like a dumpster fire in Rio, an actual one this time.
