Most impactful NFL training camp injuries so far
By John Buhler
Back in the middle of May, Buffalo Bills star wide receiver Sammy Watkins broke a small bone in his foot and had to have a screw inserted to aid in the recovery. Since his injury, Watkins is probably not going to play much for the Bills this preseason, if at all.
Though Watkins will be crucial in the Bills’ passing attack should they push for AFC Playoff contention this winter, Buffalo has had to realize that Watkins won’t likely take part in any on-field offseason activities.
Just knowing that Watkins is presumably out through the end of August, this will allow head coach Rex Ryan and Pro Bowl starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor to be creative in improving the Bills’ offensive attack.
Buffalo will likely again be a predominantly run-first offense with LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams as the featured backs. If Taylor can build on his solid 2016 NFL campaign, Buffalo has a real shot at the AFC Playoffs and could contend in the AFC East for a division crown should the New England Patriots scuffle sans Tom Brady the first four weeks or the New York Jets fall off a cliff for whatever reason.
In short, Buffalo will be able to offset not having Watkins available for most of or all the 2016 NFL preseason. The Bills have a deep roster and a solid player’s coach that will keep them focused on the task at hand: ending a 16-year AFC Playoffs drought.
