NaVorro Bowman still has three years left on his current deal, but he and the San Francisco 49ers made sure that most of his remaining years in the NFL would be in the red and gold on Wednesday.

NaVorro Bowman is one of the lone core guys from the San Francisco 49ers squad that’s left on the current roster that played in Super Bowl XLVII.

The 49ers rewarding one of the league’s best linebackers with a four-year, $44 million extension on Wednesday to keep Bowman around for another four years, on top of the three years on his current contract with the team.

Bowman gets another four years added on to three years he had left already on the deal, which means he won’t be an unrestricted free agent until 2023.

It’s an interesting move from the 49ers. Bowman’s only slated to make a base salary of $21.3 million over the next three seasons (before the extension of $11 million per year kicks in during the 2019-20 season).

He’s just now into his prime years with the 49ers before the extension at the age of 28 and despite the leg injuries that kept him out of the entire 2014 season, he came back with a bang last season. Bowman racked up 154 tackles in a full 16-game season last year and made the All-Pro First Team for the fourth time in his career.

It’s been a rough transition period for the 49ers since Jim Harbaugh’s departure and the retirements of Justin Smith and Patrick Willis, but having a leader like Bowman around is huge for a franchise and it’s good to see them rewarding one of their leaders and best players with a nice chunk of change.
