Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain has had a very bizarre career, that includes retiring twice and now failing his second drug test in back-to-back years. This time around the failed test is a result of codeine.

Back in June, it was announced that the NFL had suspended McClain 10 games to start the 2016 NFL season due to a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy. Until today, many speculated that the cause of the failed test was due to marijuana, but according to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News  it was, in fact, opiates stemming from codeine cough syrup.

Sources around the league claim that McClain is “way out of shape” and has gained 40 pounds due to his addiction. Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones was asked several questions about McClain at practice, his response was “even we don’t know all the details.”

McClain has yet to report to camp and statements like “almost impossible” are being thrown around about his ability to play football now. Head coach Jason Garrett was asked if he thought McClain’s career was over, his answer was very cliché, “We are focused on the guys who are here.”

The Cowboys linebacker will now join his teammate Randy Gregory on the reserve/did not report list, and will be fined $40,000 each day they are not present.

McClain also missed four games to open the 2015 season, so it’s obvious football is not his main priority.
