Bartolo Colon just keeps everyone in awe, making a fantastic defensive play against the Yankees on Thursday

New York Mets starting pitcher and cult hero Bartolo Colon seems to always be entertaining, whether that’s intentionally or unintentionally. He makes the best faces when he’s hauling the lumber in the batter’s box, has the best home-run trot in baseball on such rare occasions, and is somehow a highly effective hurler even at his advanced age. Now you can add defensive wizard to his illustrious resume.

On Thursday as the Mets took on the New York Yankees with Bartolo Colon on the hill, they had to like the lay of the land in the second inning as they had runners on second and third with only one out. When Gary Sanchez hit a little dribbler down the third-base line, though, Colon came up to make a play.

Not only did Bartolo Colon make a play, but he made one of the best defensive plays of the day with a bare-handed grab and throw to first:

That’s just so beautiful on so many levels. There aren’t many baseball players that size that could get to that ball—much less scoop it up bare-handed and deliver a strike to first base while also holding the runner at third.

Whenever Colon calls it quits in the near future, it’s going to be a devastating day in Major League Baseball. We won’t only be robbed of plays like this, but will also never see any repeats of the many other great moments that the pitcher has given us over the years.
