The National Football League is a battleground for careers.

With the heat indexes climbing and stakes going right along with them, the Seattle Seahawks are showing signs of frustration. On Thursday, it was defensive end Michael Bennett getting kicked out of practice after tussling with the offensive line, per ESPN.

Normally something like this wouldn’t move the needle, but Bennett has been outspoken all offseason about wanting a new deal. If he feels disrespected by head coach Pete Carroll, does this set off something larger? We will wait and see (and report back).

Meanwhile, Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak is talking about the first preseason game. Kubiak states that his quarterback competition will be coming down to the performances under the lights, rhetoric that really is window dressing.

Kubiak has been starting Mark Sanchez with the first team all of training camp. Barring some kind of miracle or injury, Sanchez is going to be under center come Week 1 when Denver takes on the Carolina Panthers. While Sanchez might not have the best numbers out of the three in preseason games, it will only be because he’s facing starters. He’s clearly the best of the bunch.

Speaking of preseason games, you won’t be seeing Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers or New York Jets running back Matt Forte in their team’s debuts. Rodgers won’t be seeing action in Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game, while Forte is still nursing a sore hamstring. Forte is 30 years old so there is mild concern that this could linger, but rest should do the trick.

Green Bay opens its slate on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Game against the Indianapolis Colts, while the Jets begin on Thursday versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Finally, the Dallas Cowboys are reportedly targeting Josh McCown as a backup for Tony Romo, following the broken ankle of Kellen Moore. McCown is the understudy in Cleveland behind Robert Griffin III, and the Browns could be motivated to turn the veteran into a draft pick. Still, Cleveland might have high demands for one of the best backups in football, knowing Dallas has little choice but to pay the price.
