Results from the Olympics men’s basketball preliminary round action on Day 1 of Rio 2016 on August 6

For many people, Olympics men’s basketball is what the Summer Olympics are all about. While that’s certainly not a unanimous feeling among sports fans and those who watch the Games, it’s hard to deny that it’s one of the main attractions and that’s definitely the case heading into Rio 2016. On Day 1 of the Games on Saturday, August 6, the Olympics men’s basketball preliminary rounds got rolling with three games out of Group A.

Here’s a look at the results of the three Group A games in Olympics men’s basketball on Saturday:

Australia: 87, France: 66

Of all of the games being played on Day 1, most people assumed that Australia vs France would be the most tightly contested matchup. As the French squad came out flat while Andrew Bogut and Patty Mills were ready to dominate for the Aussies, that potentially great matchup was soured as the Australian team rolled to victory.

China: 62, USA: 119

Echoing the same results that happened in their exhibition contests against China, USA Basketball absolute destroyed the Chinese team from the very start. Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins led the way as the Americans look like they’re on a direct path for the gold medal in Olympics men’s basketball.

Venezuela: 62, Serbia: 86

Just looking at the rosters, this was a definite mismatch in favor of Serbia even before the opening tip and it played out exactly how you’d expect given that. It was a dominant win from the first half on as Serbia could be a dark horse in this competition.

It’s only half of the teams that have played to this point, but it’s clear with results like the one from Australia-France that anything can happen in Olympics men’s basketball and that it’s going to be a thrill to watch.
